Another snorkeling adventure

Mermaid Reef has proven to be a great hit every time we venture out that way.  It is an easy bike ride from Abaco Beach Resort.  We had to give the new all in one snorkel masks another try.   Saw some great fish but still not happy with the new masks.  If having to swim very much, breathing becomes labored and I start to feel as if I am hyperventilating.  The mask makes my face too hot also.  It feels strange to have a hot face and chilled body–not having a hot flash.

The fish came out to see us even with our funky masks.

Doctorfish–a type of Surgeonfish
Stoplight Parrotfish
Stoplight Parrotfish
Midnight Parrotfish
Big Eye Squirrelfish
Silver Perch?

I have gotten a little frustrated with fish identification.  We have a great book Reef Fish Identifcation by Paul Humann but I am finding that my pictures do not match up with the book and sometimes there are different markings for younger or older fish.  Please feel free to send me a note if I have identified any fish incorrectly.  I sometimes put in a search with Google to find names of fish but this too can be confusing.  I have most trouble with the yellow fish–there are so many and with varying stripe formations that make it difficult.

Hope you enjoyed the fish.

  1. Great pictures Joy. Is Mermaid reef off the cove that is walking distance from RMHYC? Great place. I recall seeing spider lobster there. Looks like you all are having a great time.

    1. We ride our bikes to Mermaid Reef. There is a small beach area where we leave the bikes and swim from there to the reef. It is walking distance from the Jib Room/Marsh Harbour Marina where we were docked in 2013.
