Preparing for the Commodore’s Ball

(2/19/18) A commodore is a naval officer of high rank, the senior captain of a  shipping line or the president of a yacht club.  In our case the president of the Royal Marsh Harbour Yacht Club (RMHYC).  Some would say that the highlight of the RMHYC cruising season is the commodore’s ball.  I was asked to help  the decorating committee to prepare the marquis tent at Abaco Beach Resort.  We were planning on 130 guests for the event which included cocktail hour, dinner and dancing.  I volunteered to help decorate the tables.  Basically, I was happy to provide manual labor–a job at which I am particularly skilled.

My larger task was to create a photo booth with props and assume the role of photographer at the booth during cocktail hour.  Pinterest is a great resource with a gazillion ideas on photo booth decor and prop making.  I needed all the help I could get.  More on the booth later.

We were allowed full run of the marquis tent at ABR at noon on Monday.  The tables were set with white table cloths, dishes and stainless–our blank palate.

Little by little the room was transformed.

The swirly fabric circles made a big difference to the stark white tables while adding a base for the votives and the vases .

The chair bands are a cumberbund type belt that slides over the chair to dress it up.  I didn’t even know something like this existed.  Guess where you can get it? Amazon!  I briefly thought about  borrowing one of these to wear to the ball with my outfit but decided to go with a different look.

Although the room looks pretty good, we have to create a room divider out of trees and local plants as well as set up high top tables for cocktail hour and decorate those.
