Blue Clouds?

Categories :

(4/7/18) While we were eating lunch on the boat, Steve jumped up and started taking pictures of the clouds.  Notice how the underside of the clouds appear aqua blue.  It looks as if the color of the water is reflecting off the clouds but we have never seen this before.

In reality, the color of a cloud depends on the color of the light which illuminates it.  Think of clouds at sunset which can look deep orange or red. The color of a cloud can change also after light reflects off the cloud due to scattering of light by air.   A white cloud can take on a blue tint when blue light is scattered by the air between the cloud and the human eye.  This is the same mysterious phenomenon which makes makes the mountains in the distance appear blue.

Hope you enjoyed your mini cloud lesson for the day!
