Beale Street, Memphis

Categories :

The evening of December 19, 2018 was cold and rainy. It was the last night of our cross country adventure which began in Salt Lake City. It would have been so easy to curl up in our bed and get a good night’s rest before the last leg of our trip. But no, we were in Memphis. Home of good old southern barbecue and historic blues clubs. At BB Kings Blues Club we could get our fill of both music and mouth watering barbecue.

We didn’t want to take the car or Uber. The hotel staff recommended a Golf Cart Shuttle company. We were game for a golf cart ride and were pleased that it came with sides to keep out the cold and rain. The driver delivered us to Beale Street and gladly accepted our $5 tip for his trouble. Caroline had made reservations and we were seated immediately.

The BBQ was excellent. I got an extra side of hush puppies-the perfect complement to spicy smoked pork.

After dinner we walked to Silky O’Sullivan’s an Irish pub on Beale street. Caroline is moving to Ireland. What better place to learn about the Emerald Isle than a pub in Memphis? This pub in a one hundred year old building has a BBQ menu, live music, outdoor seating and a pet goat or two. Not only were we there to learn about the Irish, but we had to see the pet goat!

A quick walk around the outdoor seating to find the goats got us nothing. The goats must have found a warmer dryer place to rest on that evening. The music was enjoyable. Mainly because I knew the words and could sing along. Caroline was not as impressed and was ready to leave once the singer started talking to me about Georgia. I supposed she thought I might decide to get up on stage and sing along–that must have been a frightening idea. Maybe she was just tired.

  1. Sounds like a great evening. Caroline must have been having flashbacks to a fund evening at Cape San Blas………
