Friday, April 12
Today we venture to Hope Town. I am not sure that this village can live up to the expectations we have for it. Everyone tells us it is the most beautiful of the Abacos. We walked to the ferry to get our round trip tickets. Tickets are $24 each. The trip is about 4 miles across the Sea of Abaco–too rough and too busy for us to take the dinghy. We met a couple from Milledgeville, Georgia on the trip over. They have been coming here for several years.
Hopetown is awash in pastel color. Our trip is a step back to a time when cars are rare. There are only a few vehicles on the island and these require a permit. Some people use a golf cart, but most people we meet bike or walk. There are a few shops and restaurants. At one of the shops a woman asked me “Excuse me, but are you Meandering Joy?” She had been at the Lamb’s marina in Jacksonville and had met us. Her name is Lorna from Canada. We are discovering that the boating world is really much smaller than we imagined.
We wandered down a street and came upon a Fleming named Tranquility out of Lighthouse Point, Florida.
The lighthouse here in Hope Town is a working light house–one of the few in the Bahamas. We plan to return for a tour of the lighthouse.
