Marathon Fishing
Each morning before the sun comes up, we can see the navigation lights of boats heading out for a big day of fishing. The gulfside of Marathon is very different from the fishing areas to the West of Marathon in Key Largo and Islamorada. In Marathon, the gulfside waters are deeper and more open creating a different style of bay fishing. These waters can also be much more comfortable when the waters are rough offshore.
Fish love to hang out at the natural ledges, wrecks and artificial reefs which are littered throughout the bay area. Snapper, Spanish mackerel, and cobia are just a few of the more interesting fish swimming around here. Marathon is known though for its tremendous Tarpon fishing. Tarpon are fighting fish which put up a good battle when caught. The Seven Mile and Bahia Honda bridges are excellent spots for some of the greatest tarpon fishing action.
We took the dinghy out and explored the area to discover what we consider to be a fishing village. Tucked back in a canal is an excellent fresh seafood restaurant and multiple home bases for fishing boats of all sizes.
