Friendship Fountain

Friendship Fountain, with a diameter of 200 feet and holding a half million gallons of water.  We are fortunate that the fountain has an anemometer to control the height of the center nozzles because it was a vey windy day when we visited.  The anemometer measures the speed of the wind.  Wind speeds in excess of 155 miles an hour will limit the height of the center nozzle to 50 feet in order to control the blow off of water into the park and onto the people walking around the fountain.  We weren’t blasted by water, but I could definitely feel the spray.

The fountain is without a doubt the centerpiece of the Southbank Riverwalk.   The  wooden boardwalk zigzags along the St. Johns River for a little over a mile and is directly across the river from Jacksonville Landing.  The benches along the way are a perfect spot to watch the many lovebirds, shorebirds, boats and tourists enjoying the beautiful weather of Jacksonville.  The walk is bordered by The Chart House Restaurant on one end of the walk and the River City Brewing Company on the other.  We can highly recommend the Chart House for a great meal for $$$. We had a nice lunch at River City after touring the Museum of History and Science earlier this week which is across the street.  The view of Jacksonville Landing and the downtown area of Jacksonville can’t be beat from the riverwalk!
