Cherokee Sound
(3/30/18) Cherokee Sound was founded in 1783 by Colonel Thomas Brown and other Loyalists who moved to this isolated settlement from South Carolina. He chose the name Cherokee because of his role as an English liaison to the Cherokee Indians. The economy in the 1800’s was primarily wrecking, fishing, and farming. Today, most of the jobs relate to building boats.
The streets are clean and lined with neat homes painted in pastel colors. The beaches are pristine. There were not many people around on the day we visited other than tourists. We met two young Clemson fans sitting on the Long Dock enjoying the view.
The water in the Cherokee Sound can be very shallow as shown in the pictures below. There was a need in this isolated community to have access from the sea which didn’t depend on the tides. The solution to access was to build the 770 foot wooden dock.
Cherokee Sound has no hotels but several homes for rent. Definitely a place I would like to visit again.
