Gator Sighting-Yikes

Did you know there are only two species of Alligators remaining in the world today?  These are the American Alligator and the Chinese Alligator.  The American alligator loves Florida and Louisiana.   The latest census showed that one million gators live in each of these states.  Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama also are home to alligators in the most southern regions.  The coasts of Texas, North Carolina and South Carolina also provide nice marshy areas for the American Alligator.  A few have been spotted in Arkansas and even in Oklahoma.  The vast majority live in Louisiana.

The rivers, lakes and swamps of Florida make a perfect home for the alligator who likes to form holes in the wetlands.  These holes provide for plant diversity and in a drought they are used by other animals seeking a new home.  Alligators are important for maintaining ecological diversity.   And I thought they were only the swamp watch dog.  They sure keep me out of the swamp.  In  southern Florida alligators and crocodiles live together side by side harmoniously.  Crocodiles view humans as prey.  Alligators do not immediately think of us as prey but will attack if provoked.

He seems sufficiently provoked now to me!
