Elbow Reef Lighthouse

(12/10/17) On our recent visit to Hope Town we discovered that the Elbow Reef Lighthouse is 153 years old.  We also learned that it the last of all the manual lighted, kerosene burning lighthouses.  It has a spring mechanism that must be hand cranked several times a day to maintain its sequence of five white flashes every 15 seconds.  The light passes through optics of a fresnel lens which floats on a bed of mercury.

Dizzy yet?

Yet another reason to visit Hope Town.
