Cracker P’s for lunch

Categories :

(2/9/18)It was time to leave the anchorage at Lynyard.  The group had a plan to go to Cracker P’s for lunch but we needed to leave early to catch a rising tide to go in behind Elbow Cay to set down the anchor.  Cracker P’s is on Lubbers Quarters a small residential island.  Again, we got a ride on the dinghy of Family Business with Steve and Trisa.

Lubbers Quarters is a small island which is located between Marsh Harbor and Elbow Cay.  It is 1 mile long and 1/2 mile wide.  The beaches are secluded and there are many paths for walking jogging or golf carting.  In 2013 when we visited Lubbers Quarters there were two restaurants on the island: Lubbers’ Landing and Cracker P’s.

Lubbers’ Landing was a small resort that seemed to be very eco-friendly and provided delicious organically grown ingredients for their menu choices.  We walked all around the raised wooden walkways to explore the compound which included several cottages for rent.  We have learned that Lubbers’ Landing is now closed and up for sale.  I have not been able to find out the price for this nice property but I did discover that a 2 bedroom/2 bath 800 square foot cottage is listed for $435,000.  If you are looking for a new business opportunity or a home on an island-perhaps this is the place for you.  The entrance to the Lubber’s Landing dock remains along with the sign.

Cracker P’s is a part of a 7 1/2 acre farm which runs from east to west on Lubbers Quarters.  There are beaches on this farm on both sides of the island.  We arrived at the dock on the eastern coast.  One can walk on the nature trails and see Sapodilla, Mahogany, Tamarind, Mangroves, Wild Orchid, and Hibiscus.  You might also spot herons, egrets, red-bellied woodpeckers and banana quits along your walk.

The restaurant is named for Paul John Simmons nicknamed “Cracker Pinder.” Cracker was born in 1879 in Lexington, Georgia.  This Oglethorpe county boy was a veteran of the Spanish-American War.  His bayonet is owned by the restauranteurs.  The story goes that the Cracker family owned a duck which was terrorizing the community in Oglethorpe County. In 1915 in a struggle with Sheriff Hickory Cartwright over the family duck, Cracker shot and killed the sheriff.  Cracker fled to Florida where he hopped a schooner to the Abaco’s.  He made his way to Lubbers Quarters where he fished, farmed and planted Sapodilla trees.  It is said that he had a fire burning until he left the island in 1954.  Cracker was not a clothes horse and often walked naked around the island.

Cracker P’s is known for their full moon parties.  The dates for these parties are already on the calendar on the website if you are interested.

Time so say goodbye to Cracker P’s and head back to Meandering Joy.
