Exploring Daufuskie Island

Categories :

After anchoring outside of Daufuskie, we headed to Freeport Marina at 9:00 on Sunday morning.  No one was up as early as us so we could take any slip we wanted.  The marina is first come first serve and is free!!!!  I think it is far more popular on Friday and Saturday nights when the restaurant is open.  We were glad to have it all to ourselves.

Early morning
The tanks in Savannah are barely visible
Ready for a golf cart ride!

Daufuskie is south of Hilton Head Island,  north of Tybee Island in Georgia and west of Savannah, Georgia.  It does not have a bridge to the mainland.   It is five miles long and two miles wide.  One may take a ferry from Hilton Head, Bluffton, or Savannah to the island

Our first stop is the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church

Mid Wife Carriage

Jane Hamilton School built in the early 1900’s

We found the beach!!!

Silver Dew Winery  in a building used to store oil for the lamp at the Bloody Point Island Lighthouse which was constructed in 1883.  Converted to a winery in the mid 1900’s by Pappy Burn and closed in 1956.  Now this building and the home behind it are private property.

I had to stop and take some pictures of this house.  I like the interesting windows.  A woman jogging by told me there is more to see when Meg Ryan is at the house.  She then went on to tell me that the house is John Mellencamp’s home.  Funny that the only house I wanted to take a picture of was the home someone famous.

Iron Fish Studios

Outdoor metal works studio

Metal Cat Yard

After leaving the metal works studio, we headed back to the marina to return the golf cart–we were amazed to see a single cow standing beside the road.

The world’s smallest RV!!!

Matthew ready to head back to the boat–enough time spent on land…

Fun day at Daufuskie now we are headed to Beaufort, SC and beyond.
