Crossing the Gulf Steam to Great Sale Cay

Categories :

The anchorage at West Palm was still at six in the morning.  No other boats were stirring.  We patiently waited for a large container ship to make it through the channel before pulling up the anchor and heading out to sea.  The water was agitated.   It was a day to take sit and patiently get through the waves.  The water calmed significantly once we were through the Gulf Stream.  Little by little the water became more and more blue.  At the Bahama bank, the water became crystal clear with almost uniform depths near 12 feet.  Memory Rock-our first waypoint-sticks out like a big brown can.  It is to be avoided at all costs.  As we approached Mangrove Cay (a waypoint and another uninhabited island) we discovered a few other boats also going toward Great Sale Cay.

It was about 5:00 when we arrived at Great Sale.  The Cay is about 7 miles long running north to south but about one mile at its widest point east to west.  It is located at about the center of the Little Bahama Bank.   By the time the anchor was set, the sun was bidding us farewell.  It left us in grand style.  I hope my photographs can give a little glimpse of the beauty of this sunset.

Thoughts:  I read a devotion from John 15:18-19 this morning.  It highlighted that God provides springs of water in the darkest and brightest moments of our lives, if we look for them.  Interesting given the day we spent on the water.
